31 Monsters in 31 Days (2014 Edition): Monster 20 - Loup Garou

The Loup Garou (or Rougarou) is Louisiana's version of the werewolf. Although I've drawn in the moon this guy doesn't need it to turn from human to werewolf or Loup Garou he can do it at will. A person infected with the curse is said to carry it for 101 days until it is passed on to another victim and the Loup Garou returns to his human form.

PS I gave him candy corn teeth on purpose.

31 Monsters in 31 Days (2014 Edition): Monster 2 - The Aswang

The Aswang . . . okay I laugh every time I say that name. This guy comes from the Philippines and is supposed to be a ghoulish vampire-like werewolf. They are shapeshifters and daywalkers that like to eat young children. The Aswang also has the ability to create doppelgangers of its victims out of inanimate objects that it sends back to it’s original home and then the doppelganger will die as if it were the real person.

In my brief ten minutes of research on this guy I found that he has been drawn a lot of different ways so I kind of just made up what I thought he might look like.

Look him up on wikipedia this guy is kinda gross and terrible . . . if you are not his neighbor.

31 Monsters In 31 Days: Day 1 The Loup Garou

The Loup Garou is an American version of the Werewolf found in the swamps and forest of Acadiana and New Orleans, Louisiana. Sometimes called the Rougarou this werewolf is a bit different than those in traditional stories because he can transform from human to beast at will as well as under the effects of the full moon and the creature is fully in control of its thoughts and actions as if it was still in it's human form.

In this drawing my original thought was to do an action pose and as I usually do I talked myself out of it . . . I shouldn't do that and I will do some action in these 31 Monsters in 31 Days.

This drawing is Black and White and 11" x 17"

I may color this later on. I did experiment with the shading of the tree and the scan makes it look a lot better than I expected. I think most of these will get color but I'd rather color him by hand and not using Adobe Photoshop but who knows I may end up doing that as well.

WEREWOLF

This is a drawing I did of a werewolf a back in 2010. I documented it with 4 videos (its kinda long but fun). I'm giving this to my nephew tomorrow and he doesn't know it he saw it once and really wanted it so I wanted to get it posted on here before it's gone.

31 Monsters in 31 Days: Day 22 - The Beast of Bray Road (Wisconsin's Werewolf)

So the Beast of Bray Road . . . never heard of it . . . me either. The beast is basically Wisconsin's version of the werewolf that was first reported in 1936. The basics on this creature is that he's about six feet tall and wolf-like with yellow eyes and three claws on his hands . . . like Wolverine from the comics I think. He is supposed to smell really bad and has only been heard to say the word "Gadarah" which is the biblical place where Jesus was said to perform most of his well known miracles. How the Beast of Bray Road crossed the ocean and ended up in Wisconsin is a mystery to me but you can read more about him at Unknown Creatures, or at The Cryptid Zoo.

In my drawing I intended to draw him with claws and everything and as I seem to do a lot I draw too big for the paper and filled the page with his head. For the most part this guy is the same as any other werewolf but he's got a neat story. The colors are Copic Markers.

Welcome to Ahhh! Monsters

Welcome Ghouls and Ghoulettes to the great new blog Ahhh! Monsters,

So what is Ahhh! Monsters? Well that's the reaction you have when you see monsters you know "AHHH! MONSTERS." Well that sounded really good in my head anyway. What this is really going to be is a blog for my artwork featuring monsters.

Wait a second who are you? Well I am Kevin P. Johnson and I make art . . . now please stop interrupting so I can just tell you what's going on and we can start having some fun.

A few months ago I decided to do some drawings of old horror movie characters using old photos from the 1930's. I did three of these The Bride of Frankenstein, Frankenstein's Monster and the Creature From The Black Lagoon (1954). Originally I thought the Creature was a lot older. I was really happy with two of the drawings and only the Creature wasn't working so well (I didn't finish him) but this left me wanting to do more drawings of monsters.

The classic monsters drawings were a bit outside my normal cartoony style of drawing but being that I worked from photographs a style change was to be expected. I liked what happened but you can still see the influence of "what I do" all over the images. After doing these I thought that I should do more monsters because I have always had a love the larger than life monsters from movies and comic books and I think people would enjoy seeing my renditions of famous monsters as well as making up my own crazy monsters.

I do have a list of different monsters and urban legend's to work from but I would love to hear from people about local monsters in the areas they are from. We've got the Honey Island Swamp Monster down in southern Louisiana and I will be doing a rendition of him for sure (He's pretty much Big Foot in the swamp). I won't be doing any slasher type guys because those are not fantasy monsters to me and reality based monsters are no fun for drawing right?

Basically this blog will be a continuous flow of my artwork featuring monsters as we've already learned but I may also do movie, book and comic book reviews relating to monsters if time permits. I hope to update several times a week after the initial start up project runs its course.

What project? I knew you'd ask that.

The first project is for October, 2011 and will be 31 MONSTERS IN 31 DAYS. Now the pure way to do this will be to draw one monster each day for the entire month and that is what my intent will be. If I get behind the goal will still be to draw 31 monsters over the 31 day period. The monsters that I will draw for this have not been decided and are open to suggestion and I'll possibly be making up most of them as I go. At the very least I will be doing my interpretation of a monster that is well known but in my own special way. I did a werewolf drawing as practice for this post (see below) to give you an idea of what to expect from me (I messed up his ear) but I may also do more images dealing with old photographs of monsters.

If the 31 Monsters in 31 days project goes well I may publish all of the drawings in a comic book format/sketchbook that you will be able to purchase. And I will make prints of any drawing that appears on this site unless otherwise noted. I will probably set up a page to order prints from once I get things going.

So are you ready to start seeing some silly, crazy, scary, fun monsters? Just say yes so we can get on with this.
