31 Monsters in 31 Days: Day 14 Alien

Alien - Copyright ©2012 Kevin P. Johnson

Little green men from Mars was the fear of earthlings for many years but they are really from New Orleans. Aliens are fun because they can look like anything but I decided to go with the typical "Grey" style but with green skin and human clothes just for fun. NOLA is short for New Orleans Louisiana for those of you who are unfamiliar with the term.

This was a just quick drawing, I'm having a tough weekend and had to get this monster out for you as promised. I actually like him I just wish I had done something with his arms so he wasn't so stiff.

This drawing is done with Copic Markers and Sharpie Marker on approximately 8.5" x 11" Bristol Board.

They walk among us . . . so I've heard,

31 Monsters in 31 Days: Day 2 The Honey Island Swamp Monster

The Honey Island Swamp Monster - Copyright ©2012 Kevin P. Johnson

Day 2 is a repeat of last years Day 2 with a new version of the Honey Island Swamp Monster. I wanted to do him over because last years version wasn't a favorite of mine at all. I went with Photoshop to color this one and I'm not fully happy with the results but I like the way he looks much more fun than last years version.

I thought I'd include the black and white version of The Honey Island Swamp Monster just so you could see what he looked like before I colored him.

This drawing is Black and White and 11" x 17"

Below is last years post with some information on the Honey Island Swamp Monster:

The Honey Island Swamp Monster a creature that resembles the famous Big Foot is found in southeast Louisiana's St. Tammany Parish along the Pearl River near Slidell. The monster is locally famous and has had some national attention and I can remember being afraid he was real as a young child when there were reports of Harlan Ford's video evidence of the monster. The Honey Island Swamp monster has a few alternate versions where some believe he is more like an alligator because of a story where a train crashed in the early 1900's allowing several chimpanzee's to escape and somehow cross bread with an alligator. I tend to stick with the hairy version with clawed hands and webbed feet. The interesting thing about this creature is that he is said to have a terrible stench that can only be described as being like the smell of death. His eyes are said to be red or yellow depending on which story you'd like to believe.

In my drawing I went with the version that I know and made the eyes both red and yellow. I am not 100% happy with this drawing the head did not come out as I wanted it to (I may redraw him later) but I think that the look is about right for what I imagined as a child. The colors are a combination of Prismacolor Markers and Copic Markers.

Voodoo Girl

Hey there everyone,
This drawing is of a nude woman with Voodoo makeup on. I chose to leave here eyes white because I thought it might give it a kind of creepy or weird feel. Originally I planed on doing just the first color scheme with the orange hair but then decided to do two recolors in Adobe Photoshop with blue and green hair. I have included all three versions here as well as the black and white uncolored original.

This kind of makeup appears around New Orleans a lot during Mardi Gras and Halloween but you can see it almost year round at if you look closely. Superfans of the New Orleans Saints and arena football team the New Orleans Voodoo can bee seen wearing this makeup as well. I have not researched it's origins at this time (I should have) but I have always thought it looked cool.

These are 11" x 17" and are available as prints for $15.00 each or all three color versions for $35.00 (plus shipping and handling) contact me if you are interested.

CONtraflow Convention sketches November 4-6, 2011

Well I did the CONtraflow Convention in New Orleans (Gretna), Louisiana this past weekend and attendance was really low but I did a few sketches for myself. These were mostly just ideas for better drawings to maybe do later.

I'm also throwing in some pictures of my table (it was an 8 foot table) with all my goodies that I have for sale.

Thanks for looking,
