31 Monsters in 31 Days: Monster 14, 15, 16, 17, & 18 - The Monster Fight

Monster Fight - Copyright ©2013 Kevin P. Johnson

This is a monster catch up Monster Fight (I was supposed to have six monsters in there but it was getting late so I went with five). These are just five made up monsters with no real names. I wish I had made the skull guy doing something more action oriented but the floating yellow blob is pretty fun with his one "POWER HAND".

I'll only be one monster behind now and I hope to get him done tomorrow along with number twenty as well.

This drawing was done in an 11" x 17" Strathmore Bristol Smooth (300 Series) 100 lb. paper with Sharpie Markers, Sakura Pigma Sensei pens and Adobe Photoshop Colors.

Thanks for looking,

31 Monsters in 31 Days: Day 31 Halloween Man

Halloween Man - Copyright © 2012 Kevin P. Johnson
HAPPY HALLOWEEN! This is our old friend Halloween Man who first appeared here last Halloween. If you'll remember he's the guy that you run into when you are out Trick or Treating that looks like he is part of a Halloween yard display but then jumps out and scares you. Well this time Halloween Man has his bag and will be right beside you looking for trick or treat goodies. Have a happy and safe Halloween.

This was drawn on  part of a page of 11" x 17" Bristol Board with Sharpie Marker and colored using Adobe Photoshop.

HAPPY HALLOWEEN!,

31 Monsters in 31 Days: Day 29 Bloody Bones

Bloody Bones - Copyright © 2012 Kevin P. Johnson
Bloody Bones is one of those creatures that parents tell children to keep them from being bad. He is said to live near a pond or in a dark cupboard under the stairs. It is said that if you peeked into the cupboard you would see him sitting on a large pile of bloody bones that he had collected from children who had lied or said bad words. Bloody Bones has blood running down his face and appears as a horrible monster. He has other names as well Rawhead, Tommy Rawhead or Hobgoblin.

This drawing was done  in an 5.5" x 8.5" Strathmore (400 Series) 60 lb. paper sketchbook with Sharpie Marker and Copic Markers with background color and touchups done in Adobe Photoshop.

31 Monsters in 31 Days: Day 27 Cherufe

Cherufe - Copyright © 2012 Kevin P. Johnson
From deep within' the volcanoes of Chile comes the Cherufe, a humanoid creatures made of rock and magma that is said to be the cause of volcanic eruptions and earthquakes throughout the region. The Cherufe have a fondness of human flesh and many sacrifices were made to keep the beast's at bay and stop it from causing mass destruction. There is another creature that uses this name a humanoid dragon creature that has been featured on a Cartoon Network cartoon series called The Secret Saturdays.

This drawing was done  in an 5.5" x 8.5" Strathmore (400 Series) 60 lb. paper sketchbook with Sharpie Marker and and Copic Markers with touch up of the black colors in Adobe Photoshop.

31 Monsters in 31 Days: Day 26 Am Fear Liath Mòr (The Big Grey Man of Ben MacDhui)

Am Fear Liath Mòr (The Big Grey Man of Ben MacDhui) - Copyright © 2012 Kevin P. Johnson

Well friends this guy got thrown in at the last minute. I was supposed to be drawing a monster called the "Brag" but it turns out that is almost exactly the same thing as the Kelpie I did a few weeks back and I didn't want to do another water horse. So who is this guy? The Am Fear Liath Mòr (The Big Grey Man of Ben MacDhui) is a creature or ghost like being that haunts the summit and passes of Scotland's Cairngorms of Ben Macdui. The creature is said to be an extremely tall being covered with short hair but also has been described as an unseen ghostly presence that haunts mountain climbers making them feel uneasy as they feel that they are being followed by some strange creature.

This drawing was done  in an 5.5" x 8.5" Strathmore (400 Series) 60 lb. paper sketchbook with Sharpie Marker and colored in Adobe Photoshop.

31 Monsters in 31 Days: Day 25 Paasselkä Devils

Paasselkä Devils - Copyright © 2012 Kevin P. Johnson

I must admit that this is the worst monster I could have ever picked. When I originally looked it up I must have read a description of something else but wrote this on my list. Paasselkä Devils are floating balls of light that are found over a Lake Paasselkä, Finland and they move at various speeds. Sometimes they appear alone and other time in groups of several balls. People have reported that it sometimes acts as if it is  consciousness. In my drawing I had no idea what to do so I figured I'd draw some floating stuff and then a larger shape that was like a silhouette of a person that I figured would be the group consciousness. I went in and added photoshop effects and tried to make it seem as if all of this stuff was trying to join together . . . did it work?

This drawing was done  in an 5.5" x 8.5" Strathmore (400 Series) 60 lb. paper sketchbook with Sharpie Marker and then edited in Adobe Photoshop.I had planned on doing a different drawing for this but I liked this simple little line drawing enough that I decided against doing another drawing.

Lightning bugs for sure,

31 Monsters in 31 Days: Day 21 The MO-MO (Missouri Monster)

MOMO - Copyright © 2012 Kevin P. Johnson
MOMO - Copyright © 2012 Kevin P. Johnson

MOMO - Copyright © 2012 Kevin P. Johnson
The Mo-Mo is Missouri's version of the Big Foot. Mo-Mo is short for Missouri Monster a 7 foot tall creature with long black hair that covers it's face and pumpkin shaped head. The creature is said to have a terrible stench and is reported to eat dogs. You can read about this guy on the American Hauntings website.

I did three versions of this guy because I couldn't really decide how he was supposed to look. I just figured he was a mass of hair and had glowing eyes because if he had a pumpkin head it only made sense to have glowing eyes right?  These drawings were done  in an 5.5" x 8.5" Strathmore (400 Series) 60 lb. paper sketchbook with Sharpie Marker and then colored later in Adobe Photoshop.

So much MO,

31 Monsters in 31 Days: Day 20 Lusca (Giant Octopus)

Lusca - Copyright © 2012 Kevin P. Johnson
The Lusca is believed to be a giant octopus living in the waters of the Caribbean that is said to grow from 75 to 200 feet long and attacks ships and submarines. The giant octopus has never been found at these sizes and is probably just a rumor spread by fisherman. Now after I did this drawing I came across a different version of the Lusca that I wish I had drawn that being a giant half shark half octopus creature found in the Bahamas. The tale of that version of the Lusca can be read about at the American Monsters website.

This drawing was done  in an 5.5" x 8.5" Strathmore (400 Series) 60 lb. paper sketchbook with Sharpie Marker and then colored later in Adobe Photoshop. I added a bit of texture to it to see how I liked that effect and it worked a bit like I wanted.

Eight is enough,

31 Monsters in 31 Days: Day 18 Lizard Man of Scape Ore Swamp

Lizard Man of Scape Ore Swamp - Copyright © 2012 Kevin P. Johnson
The Lizard Man of Scape Ore Swamp (Lee County, South Carolina) is a 7 foot tall bipedal creature of massive strength. It's been reported that it has dark hair with scaly lizard like skin on it's hands, feet and face but I chose to draw him without the hair and more of a lizard monster with big teeth. This guy has been seen several times and attacked cars near the swamp causing lots of damage. Read more about these events on wikipedia: Lizard Man of Scape Ore Swamp

This was drawn in an 5.5" x 8.5" Strathmore (400 Series) 60 lb. paper  in a sketchbook with Sharpie Marker and Staedtler Pigment Liner pens and then was colored in Adobe Photoshop.

I'm so Lizard,

31 Monsters in 31 Days: Day 16 Vampire

Vampire - Copyright © 2012 Kevin P. Johnson

Vampire . . . yeah we all know about those blood suckers from the movies and True Blood but sometimes vampires appear as cartoon characters and I figured I'd make up one . . . I present you Brad Vlad and his friend Louis Ville Bat.

This was drawn on  part of a page of 11" x 17" Bristol Board with Sharpie Marker and colored using Adobe Photoshop.

31 Monsters in 31 Days: Day 15 Hellhound

Hellhound - Copyright © 2012 Kevin P. Johnson

The Hellhound or Hell Hound is a creature that comes in many sizes and shapes throughout folklore, movies, comic books and other literature. The creature is a dog or wolf with supernatural powers often used to guard something or someone of great value that should not be disturbed. The dog has many different shapes throughout the many tales it is featured in, it sometimes appears with one to three heads or on fire and often is represented as a black dog. These elements are varied and sometimes only some of them are applied in the tale.

Check out the wikipedia page for the Hellhound

31 Monsters in 31 Days: Day 10 Kelpie

Kelpie - Copyright © 2012 Kevin P. Johnson

The Kelpie is a Scottish shape shifter that is most often found in horse form and lives and hunts in the rivers around Scotland. the Kelpie usually has a human form that it will use to attract suitors. When a Kelpie catches a human they drag it into the river and eat the victims but usually will leave only a heart or liver behind. In it's horse form the Kelpie gets its victim to climb on its back to ride it and when they do it becomes sticky and they can not get off of the horse as it drags them to their fate. The Kelpie is said to come in three colors black, white and green and they are said to always have dripping wet hair even if they are in human form on land.

The drawing is done with Sharpie on 11" x 14" Bristol Board and colored with Adobe Photoshop.

31 Monsters in 31 Days: Day 6 Skunk Ape

Skunk Ape - Copyright © 2012 Kevin P. Johnson

The Skunk Ape is a nasty stinky creature found in the southern United States mostly in Florida. It is a Big Foot type creature that gets its name from its horrible smell and ape-like appearance. I'd never heard of this one before but he has probably got my favorite name of any of the creatures I've looked up so far. I will probably do another drawing of him as a full body when I'm over this sickness I've had all week.

In my drawing I've chosen to give him the white stripe like a skunk would have because that just seemed like the right thing for a guy called the Skunk Ape.

This drawing is done with Copic Markers and Sharpie with Adobe Photoshop after on 8.5" x 11" Bristol Board

More information and photos of the Skunk Ape  I also found these two humorous videos below on a sighting of the Skunk Ape. The second video's quality is pretty bad but that makes sense being that it seems all encounters with these types of creatures never have good quality video or photography.

Watch out for the stinky Skunk Ape,

31 Monsters in 31 Days: Day 2 The Honey Island Swamp Monster

The Honey Island Swamp Monster - Copyright ©2012 Kevin P. Johnson

Day 2 is a repeat of last years Day 2 with a new version of the Honey Island Swamp Monster. I wanted to do him over because last years version wasn't a favorite of mine at all. I went with Photoshop to color this one and I'm not fully happy with the results but I like the way he looks much more fun than last years version.

The Honey Island Swamp Monster - Copyright ©2012 Kevin P. Johnson
I thought I'd include the black and white version of The Honey Island Swamp Monster just so you could see what he looked like before I colored him.

This drawing is Black and White and 11" x 17"

Below is last years post with some information on the Honey Island Swamp Monster:
The Honey Island Swamp Monster - Copyright ©2011 Kevin P. Johnson
The Honey Island Swamp Monster a creature that resembles the famous Big Foot is found in southeast Louisiana's St. Tammany Parish along the Pearl River near Slidell. The monster is locally famous and has had some national attention and I can remember being afraid he was real as a young child when there were reports of Harlan Ford's video evidence of the monster. The Honey Island Swamp monster has a few alternate versions where some believe he is more like an alligator because of a story where a train crashed in the early 1900's allowing several chimpanzee's to escape and somehow cross bread with an alligator. I tend to stick with the hairy version with clawed hands and webbed feet. The interesting thing about this creature is that he is said to have a terrible stench that can only be described as being like the smell of death. His eyes are said to be red or yellow depending on which story you'd like to believe.

In my drawing I went with the version that I know and made the eyes both red and yellow. I am not 100% happy with this drawing the head did not come out as I wanted it to (I may redraw him later) but I think that the look is about right for what I imagined as a child. The colors are a combination of Prismacolor Markers and Copic Markers.

Squidley Tophat

Squidley Tophat - Copyright © 2012 Kevin P. Johnson

This was a crazy little monster drawing I did not really having an idea or caring too much as to what was going to happen. I just wanted to do something silly and naturally unnatural. The coloring was much the same I just dropped in colors in photoshop and then used that burn tool to give it so weird shadows. This drawing was just about being lose and silly and fun . . . did it work?

Thanks for checking out the drawings,

Voodoo Girl

Hey there everyone,
This drawing is of a nude woman with Voodoo makeup on. I chose to leave here eyes white because I thought it might give it a kind of creepy or weird feel. Originally I planed on doing just the first color scheme with the orange hair but then decided to do two recolors in Adobe Photoshop with blue and green hair. I have included all three versions here as well as the black and white uncolored original.

This kind of makeup appears around New Orleans a lot during Mardi Gras and Halloween but you can see it almost year round at if you look closely. Superfans of the New Orleans Saints and arena football team the New Orleans Voodoo can bee seen wearing this makeup as well. I have not researched it's origins at this time (I should have) but I have always thought it looked cool.

These are 11" x 17" and are available as prints for $15.00 each or all three color versions for $35.00 (plus shipping and handling) contact me if you are interested.

Monster Man

I drew this guy about a month ago and it took me a while to get around to coloring him. Monster Man as I'm calling him is a character I created for this drawing. He's part scarecrow, part tentacled sea creature and part creature with sharp claws (whatever that may be) wrapped up in a Santa Claus type jacket and blue jeans. Oh and he's got a mean tree about to attack him from behind.

Colored in Adobe Photoshop.

Punk Rock Zombie Color Edit

Punk Rock Zombie - Copyright ©2012 Kevin P. Johnson

As promised the second version of Punk Rock Zombie.

I like this coloring a lot better. I believe that the other version was just me overusing a trick and doesn't feel right to me. This version of the coloring feels more natural as far as my cartoon style goes and is a bit more appealing.

Let me know which one you like better.

Two days in a row!

This is a little zombie I did at work. He's wearing his leather jacket and CBGB t-shirt. I played around with the Adobe Photoshop "Burn" tool again and am not quite sure that I like the results. I'm experimenting but I think I went a bit too far with it this time. I am recoloring this one in my traditional way and will have that one posted for later today you to see as well.

SLIME MONSTER

SLIME MONSTER - Copyright ©2012 Kevin P. Johnson

Hey there boys and girls,

Well I've been gone away from this blog for a while. 2012 has been a bad year financially and making it worse my dog Spooky passed away in February. The basic problem has been not having art supplies to keep this page moving forward but I will be doing more art and expect to get back to updating this page regularly.

I was messing around and decided that I needed to draw a Slime Monster . . . these things just happen I can't explain it to you. So when he was done I brought it into Adobe Photoshop and made him green for some reason instead of just using two or three variations of the colors for shading I decided to use the "Burn" tool to see how that would work out and it kind of had the effect I wanted (it did get a little darker in some spots than I had intended) and I should use it more often.

Beware the Slime Monster he's lurking in that tank in the back of your toilet.

Thanks for checking out the drawings,
