31 Monsters in 31 Days: Day 15 Hellhound

Hellhound - Copyright © 2012 Kevin P. Johnson

The Hellhound or Hell Hound is a creature that comes in many sizes and shapes throughout folklore, movies, comic books and other literature. The creature is a dog or wolf with supernatural powers often used to guard something or someone of great value that should not be disturbed. The dog has many different shapes throughout the many tales it is featured in, it sometimes appears with one to three heads or on fire and often is represented as a black dog. These elements are varied and sometimes only some of them are applied in the tale.

Check out the wikipedia page for the Hellhound

This drawing is done with Sharpie Marker on 11" x 17" Bristol Board and colored using Adobe Photoshop.

31 Monsters in 31 Days: Day 14 Alien

Alien - Copyright ©2012 Kevin P. Johnson

Little green men from Mars was the fear of earthlings for many years but they are really from New Orleans. Aliens are fun because they can look like anything but I decided to go with the typical "Grey" style but with green skin and human clothes just for fun. NOLA is short for New Orleans Louisiana for those of you who are unfamiliar with the term.

This was a just quick drawing, I'm having a tough weekend and had to get this monster out for you as promised. I actually like him I just wish I had done something with his arms so he wasn't so stiff.

This drawing is done with Copic Markers and Sharpie Marker on approximately 8.5" x 11" Bristol Board.

They walk among us . . . so I've heard,

31 Monsters in 31 Days: Day 12 Gnome of Girona

Gnome of Girona - Copyright 2012 Kevin P. Johnson
This weird little guy was actually found and caught in 1989 in Girona, Cantalonia (Spain) and lived for about 24 hours after it was captured. The creature was said to be a blue hairless being with what seemed to be a tumor on its head. The Gnome of Girona (Gnomo de Girona) was found by campers who heard some low volume moans near their camp. The creature was small and his captors said that it moved fast and made a sound "a kind of squeak similar to an old man's laughter."

Scientist have said that this creature is a hoax and is very likely the remains of some other prematurely born animal such as a calf or even a deformed rabbit.

This drawing is done with Copic Markers, Prismacolor Markers and Sharpie Marker on approximately 8.5" x 11" Bristol Board.

That's the weirdest Smurf ever,

31 Monsters in 31 Days: Day 11 Minotaur

Minotaur - Copyright © 2012 Kevin P. Johnson

So last year I tried a Minotaur and I couldn't get him to look right and ended up settling on a head shot. This year I aimed to do a full body and I think he came out pretty good (I see a few flaws but I'm OK with them). I thought giving him a poked out eye would be fun and it would give him a story even if it is never told.

The drawing is done with Sharpie on 11" x 14" Bristol Board and colored with Adobe Photoshop (Made into 11" x 17" in Photoshop).

31 Monsters in 31 Days: Day 10 Kelpie

Kelpie - Copyright © 2012 Kevin P. Johnson

The Kelpie is a Scottish shape shifter that is most often found in horse form and lives and hunts in the rivers around Scotland. the Kelpie usually has a human form that it will use to attract suitors. When a Kelpie catches a human they drag it into the river and eat the victims but usually will leave only a heart or liver behind. In it's horse form the Kelpie gets its victim to climb on its back to ride it and when they do it becomes sticky and they can not get off of the horse as it drags them to their fate. The Kelpie is said to come in three colors black, white and green and they are said to always have dripping wet hair even if they are in human form on land.

The drawing is done with Sharpie on 11" x 14" Bristol Board and colored with Adobe Photoshop.

The worst army ever assembled! I don't think there is anything else to say about these guys. Good for scares but they are only gonna have like 3 or 4 hit points.

31 Monsters in 31 Days: Day 8 Shadow Queen and Shadow People

Shadow Queen - Copyright ©2012 Kevin P. Johnson
Another monster returning from last years list is Shadow People but in this case I kind of thought up a story in my head and this is the Shadow Queen the ruthless leader of the Shadow World. Maybe I'll make a comic book about it someday. As for the queen she's the first female Shadow Person that I have drawn giving a gender to what had been a genderless creature as far as my drawings have gone.

In the drawing we just see a bust of the Shadow Queen win a less than happy look on her face (if she actually has a face) because I wanted it to feel like it could be a statue. The drawing is done with Copic Markers and Sharpie with Adobe Photoshop after on 11" x 14" Bristol Boar.

Below is another drawing I did earlier this year of the Shadow People:
Shadow People - Copyright ©2012 Kevin P. Johnson
This second drawing was done a few months ago but I could not find it and then by total accident it appeared when it was time to work on this post. I added the blue to it for this post but the drawing was finished long before the 31 Monsters in 31 Days project started.

This drawing is done with Copic Markers and Sharpie with Adobe Photoshop after on 11" x 17" Bristol Boar.

31 Monsters in 31 Days: Day 7 Mongolian Death Worm

The Mongolia Death Worm! Sounds awesome doesn't it but sadly he's not all that big just between 2 and 5 feet long. This guy has to depend on his powers which is to spray a toxic acid from its mouth that will cause death upon touch and it can also shoot electricity from a distance. I would advise staying away from the Gobi Desert during the months of June and July when they say the beast is active.

Read more about the Mongolian Death Worm

My drawing is incomplete actually because my brown markers ran out and I figured I wouldn't add in the sky or sun at this point so that it would keep it's unfinished look.

This drawing is done with Copic Markers, Prismacolor Markers and Sharpie on 11" x 17" Bristol Board

31 Monsters in 31 Days: Day 6 Skunk Ape

Skunk Ape - Copyright © 2012 Kevin P. Johnson

The Skunk Ape is a nasty stinky creature found in the southern United States mostly in Florida. It is a Big Foot type creature that gets its name from its horrible smell and ape-like appearance. I'd never heard of this one before but he has probably got my favorite name of any of the creatures I've looked up so far. I will probably do another drawing of him as a full body when I'm over this sickness I've had all week.

In my drawing I've chosen to give him the white stripe like a skunk would have because that just seemed like the right thing for a guy called the Skunk Ape.

This drawing is done with Copic Markers and Sharpie with Adobe Photoshop after on 8.5" x 11" Bristol Board

More information and photos of the Skunk Ape  I also found these two humorous videos below on a sighting of the Skunk Ape. The second video's quality is pretty bad but that makes sense being that it seems all encounters with these types of creatures never have good quality video or photography.

Watch out for the stinky Skunk Ape,

31 Monsters in 31 Days: Day 5 The Mummy

The Mummy - Copyright ©2012 Kevin P. Johnson

Hey everyone sorry that this one was a few hours late I've been sick and the next few days might be a bit later if I can't get back on the schedule I was on.

Anyway The Mummy . . . I still think this guy is a joke but I had to bring him back (check out last years version of The Mummy to see my opinions on this guy). For this year I decided to make him a little funny so I gave him that little head tilt thing  that dog's do when they are curious about something, a few buttons and his wrappings kinda look like they might be bacon . . . probably is bacon . . . mmmmm bacon.

This drawing is done with Copic Markers and Prismacolor Markers on 11" x 17" Bristol Board

31 Monsters in 31 Days: Day 4 Frankenstein's Monster

Frankenstein's Monster - Copyright ©2012 Kevin P. Johnson
This is my second Frankenstein's Monster that I have ever drawn . . . and I rushed it a little because I'm sick and did not want to miss a day here. He is close to what I wanted to do (minus the background that was going to have people chasing after him with torches (maybe that will get added later). The Monster has always been one of my favorites and I don't know why I don't draw him more.

Anyway I'm going to keep this short being I feel like old Frankenstein's Monster . . . check out my old post with my other drawing of the Monster included.

31 Monsters in 31 Days: Day 3 Ghosts in the Graveyard

Ghosts in the Graveyard - Copyright  ©2012 Kevin P. Johnson

So do you remember the game Ghost in the Graveyard? Well that kids game was what I thought about before doing this drawing. It's a simple idea just a pair of ghost hiding behind a pair of tombstones waiting to catch the other players in the game.

I had hoped by drawing in the tombstones through the ghost it would give them a more transparent look but I'm not sure that really worked out the way I expected. I also added a disinterested cat for a little humor which I think worked out well.

This drawing is done with Copic Markers and Sharpie pens on 11" x 17" Bristol Board with some adjustments in Adobe Photoshop to smooth out the blacks.

BOO!

31 Monsters in 31 Days: Day 2 The Honey Island Swamp Monster

The Honey Island Swamp Monster - Copyright ©2012 Kevin P. Johnson

Day 2 is a repeat of last years Day 2 with a new version of the Honey Island Swamp Monster. I wanted to do him over because last years version wasn't a favorite of mine at all. I went with Photoshop to color this one and I'm not fully happy with the results but I like the way he looks much more fun than last years version.

The Honey Island Swamp Monster - Copyright ©2012 Kevin P. Johnson
I thought I'd include the black and white version of The Honey Island Swamp Monster just so you could see what he looked like before I colored him.

This drawing is Black and White and 11" x 17"

Below is last years post with some information on the Honey Island Swamp Monster:
The Honey Island Swamp Monster - Copyright ©2011 Kevin P. Johnson
The Honey Island Swamp Monster a creature that resembles the famous Big Foot is found in southeast Louisiana's St. Tammany Parish along the Pearl River near Slidell. The monster is locally famous and has had some national attention and I can remember being afraid he was real as a young child when there were reports of Harlan Ford's video evidence of the monster. The Honey Island Swamp monster has a few alternate versions where some believe he is more like an alligator because of a story where a train crashed in the early 1900's allowing several chimpanzee's to escape and somehow cross bread with an alligator. I tend to stick with the hairy version with clawed hands and webbed feet. The interesting thing about this creature is that he is said to have a terrible stench that can only be described as being like the smell of death. His eyes are said to be red or yellow depending on which story you'd like to believe.

In my drawing I went with the version that I know and made the eyes both red and yellow. I am not 100% happy with this drawing the head did not come out as I wanted it to (I may redraw him later) but I think that the look is about right for what I imagined as a child. The colors are a combination of Prismacolor Markers and Copic Markers.

31 Monsters In 31 Days: Day 1 The Loup Garou

The Loup Garou - Copyright ©2012 Kevin P. Johnson

The Loup Garou is an American version of the Werewolf found in the swamps and forest of Acadiana and New Orleans, Louisiana. Sometimes called the Rougarou this werewolf is a bit different than those in traditional stories because he can transform from human to beast at will as well as under the effects of the full moon and the creature is fully in control of its thoughts and actions as if it was still in it's human form.

Here is a link to read more about the Loup Garou

In this drawing my original thought was to do an action pose and as I usually do I talked myself out of it . . . I shouldn't do that and I will do some action in these 31 Monsters in 31 Days.

This drawing is Black and White and 11" x 17"

I may color this later on. I did experiment with the shading of the tree and the scan makes it look a lot better than I expected. I think most of these will get color but I'd rather color him by hand and not using Adobe Photoshop but who knows I may end up doing that as well.

This page features two random sketches drawn in preparation for my 31 Monsters in 31 Days project. We have a scary Red Demon and a Snake Man with a weird eye. These guys are kind of fun and silly . . . just the way I like it.

These were done with Copic Markers.

Foot Face

Foot Face - Copyright ©2012 Kevin P. Johnson

This one is just a silly little doodle that turned into something. The FOOT FACE monster is of the most horrible creatures to ever roam the world . . . not because of it's danger to humans or the world but because of it's terrible smell. The Foot Face has the worst case of "Funk Foot" ever and that smell has been known to cause people to pass out and slap their mama's but this smell is nothing compared to it's breath . . . we don't want to talk about it's breath. The worst part about this creature is that it can fly and likes to spend it's time flying under peoples noses.

This drawing was done with Copic Markers.

2nd Annual 31 Monsters in 31 Days - October 2012

Ahhh! Monsters Promo - Copyright © 2012 Kevin P. Johnson

Hey there boys and girls,
This October I will be returning to the fun time I had last year with the 2nd Annual 31 Monsters in 31 Days. I will be drawing a monster a day and getting them posted here for your entertainment. The plan is one monster a day but if something happens and I miss a day I promise that the 31 will be done in the 31 days. I plan to revisit some of the monsters from last year as well as create all new monsters for this years event. I hope you all enjoy the monsters and follow along every day in October to see what goes bump in the night . . . or day . . . or those in between times.

Here is a fun little Swamp Monster guy that I did just using pencil and Copic Markers. I really like this guy he was fun to draw and is kind of funny looking. I went with the "No black ink technique again" and I really am liking the way that is working out.

More Monsters coming soon.

It's getting to the time of year when Vampires come out most often I thought I'd take a stake to one . . . yeah that was a bad joke but I'm sure you giggled a tiny bit on the inside.

This is a sketch done with just pencil and copic markers I wanted to try to do without the black edges on everything and see how it would look. I really like the look of it and I should be doing more drawings like this in the future.

Squidley Tophat - Copyright © 2012 Kevin P. Johnson

This was a crazy little monster drawing I did not really having an idea or caring too much as to what was going to happen. I just wanted to do something silly and naturally unnatural. The coloring was much the same I just dropped in colors in photoshop and then used that burn tool to give it so weird shadows. This drawing was just about being lose and silly and fun . . . did it work?

Voodoo Girl

Hey there everyone,
This drawing is of a nude woman with Voodoo makeup on. I chose to leave here eyes white because I thought it might give it a kind of creepy or weird feel. Originally I planed on doing just the first color scheme with the orange hair but then decided to do two recolors in Adobe Photoshop with blue and green hair. I have included all three versions here as well as the black and white uncolored original.

This kind of makeup appears around New Orleans a lot during Mardi Gras and Halloween but you can see it almost year round at if you look closely. Superfans of the New Orleans Saints and arena football team the New Orleans Voodoo can bee seen wearing this makeup as well. I have not researched it's origins at this time (I should have) but I have always thought it looked cool.

These are 11" x 17" and are available as prints for $15.00 each or all three color versions for $35.00 (plus shipping and handling) contact me if you are interested.

Sea Creature

Well this is a weird one right? This drawing happened by accident really it was supposed to be something else and it wasn't working out and I decided not to waste the paper and just make something out of it. Well what I made is this Sea Creature. It's got one giant eye and two tentacles like every good sea creature should . . . that's my story and I'm sticking to it. Anyway this is just a little doodle of a monster that I did.

Monster Man

I drew this guy about a month ago and it took me a while to get around to coloring him. Monster Man as I'm calling him is a character I created for this drawing. He's part scarecrow, part tentacled sea creature and part creature with sharp claws (whatever that may be) wrapped up in a Santa Claus type jacket and blue jeans. Oh and he's got a mean tree about to attack him from behind.

Colored in Adobe Photoshop.

Luke vs. The Rancor Monster a Star Wars Parody

OK boys and girls I had a suggestion by a friend to draw the Rancor. I started drawing this and I wasn't really liking how the drawing was turning out so I figured what the heck I'll just finish him enough to get something funny out of it. So here is what I am calling the first cut of the Luke vs. The Rancor monster from Star Wars Episode VI: Return of the Jedi. As much as George Lucas changes his movies I assume something like this could have been the original cut of the film. It's not perfect by any means I just wanted to post a new picture.

Punk Rock Zombie Color Edit

Punk Rock Zombie - Copyright ©2012 Kevin P. Johnson

As promised the second version of Punk Rock Zombie.

I like this coloring a lot better. I believe that the other version was just me overusing a trick and doesn't feel right to me. This version of the coloring feels more natural as far as my cartoon style goes and is a bit more appealing.

Let me know which one you like better.

Two days in a row!

This is a little zombie I did at work. He's wearing his leather jacket and CBGB t-shirt. I played around with the Adobe Photoshop "Burn" tool again and am not quite sure that I like the results. I'm experimenting but I think I went a bit too far with it this time. I am recoloring this one in my traditional way and will have that one posted for later today you to see as well.

SLIME MONSTER

SLIME MONSTER - Copyright ©2012 Kevin P. Johnson

Hey there boys and girls,

Well I've been gone away from this blog for a while. 2012 has been a bad year financially and making it worse my dog Spooky passed away in February. The basic problem has been not having art supplies to keep this page moving forward but I will be doing more art and expect to get back to updating this page regularly.

I was messing around and decided that I needed to draw a Slime Monster . . . these things just happen I can't explain it to you. So when he was done I brought it into Adobe Photoshop and made him green for some reason instead of just using two or three variations of the colors for shading I decided to use the "Burn" tool to see how that would work out and it kind of had the effect I wanted (it did get a little darker in some spots than I had intended) and I should use it more often.

Beware the Slime Monster he's lurking in that tank in the back of your toilet.
